As part of the Agrimax project, Exergy was responsible for the design and set up of two biorefineries, in Italy and Spain for the production of high-value bio-compounds with application in packaging, ingredients for the food industry and manufacturing of agricultural materials.
The locations in Palma, Italy and Lleida, Spain were chosen because of their close proximity to large amounts of crop and food processing waste; tomato and wheat in Italy and olive and potato in Spain.
The project integrated a range of technologies, into a fully flexible and efficient biorefineries, some of the technologies utilised included mechanical pre-processing of biomass, thermal and chemical treatments, ultrasound-assisted extraction; solvent extraction, Ion-exchange resin, filtration, ultrafiltration and diafiltration.
Exergy played a pivotal role working with scientists, industrial partners and technology providers, understanding the individual challenges as well as commercial challenges for the design of a demonstrator plant based on a cascade design strategy.
